Bir Ona Well | Bergisch Gladbach Square

Bir ‘Ona is located southwest of Beit Jala, and connects the lands of Cremisan Monastery with those of Beit Jala. In the past, the area witnessed a thriving community with a rich agricultural hinterland. The name “Bir ‘Ona,” translates into “the assisting well.” Like many landmarks in the area, which are attributed to the Virgin Mary, such as the Well of the Lady and the Milk Grotto, to name a few, Bir ‘Ona is traditionally connected with the Virgin Mary, when she, Joseph and baby Jesus rested in the area to quench their thirst during their escape from King Herod. According to tradition, Mary prayed for the water to rise, and God answered her prayers. The people of Beit Jala also believe that the handprints of Mary and Jesus are visible on the stone that covers the well.
