Mosque of Omar Bin Al Khattab

Religious
Islamic
battir

This is the first mosque in Beit Sahour, established during the Ottoman Rule in Palestine, and distinguished by its Islamic style of architecture. In the 1920’s the mosque’s area did not exceed 30 square meters and accommodated around 30 worshippers. In 1953, efforts were made to expand the mosque to almost five times its size to accommodate around 500 worshippers. In 1980, another extension was added to the mosque to accommodate female worshippers. Over the years, the mosque committee was involved in several community initiatives, including the provision of religious lessons, the establishment of a nursery for orphaned children, a health clinic that provides free of charge health services, and a small library. The committee also endeavors to engage the Muslim community in many activities, including the provision of care and assistance to the poor and the needy.
