The mosaics handicraft is part of Palestine’s ancient traditions, and goes far beyond the olive wood and mother of pearl crafts that were taught by the Franciscans hundreds of years ago. The Bethlehem Mosaic Center is located on Star Street, and underwent rehabilitation works as part of the project for “Local Development through the Rehabilitation and Revitalization of the Historic Built Environment in Palestine.” The initiative that was inaugurated in 2018, stems from the many and different efforts made to preserve the beauty of the Old City, contribute to building and developing the capacities and technical skills of students in the mosaic handicraft, generate income for youth, and contribute to the process of cultural heritage preservation. The mosaics handicraft represents the strong connection between the people of Bethlehem and their roots, and it is a symbol of living together in harmony.
