The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation is located in Beit Jala. It is one of the many Lutheran churches and institutions that fall under the umbrella of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, which is renowned for its kindness and hospitality. The Church in Beit Jala was established in 1894, as part of the Protestant mission in the said city to build schools and churches and other institutions beginning from 1845 upon the arrival of the first mission. The Church plays a very important role in the community. Apart from delivering its religious message, it has been providing support to the Palestinian community in the fields of education, the environment and awareness-raising, not to mention the resilient role it assumed in solidarity with the Palestinian people. In 1945, the Church established a home for orphaned and abandoned boys. In 2001, Abraham’s Guesthouse, known in Arabic as “Beit Ibrahim,” was built adjacent to the church. Its architecture is an amalgamation of modern and oriental flavors that are visible in the high ceilings, arched windows and marble intarsia floors, with homely furniture made from wood and comfortable fabrics. One should not miss the view from the roof terrace overlooking Bethlehem and the Jordan hills on a clear day, and south of Jerusalem.
